SAT Prep Course

Mundo Academy is proud to parter with Barrio Action to offer a FREE SAT preparation course for students in the 10th and 11th grades who live in El Sereno and Lincoln Heights areas of Los Angeles. The course will cover content commonly tested on the exam such as math, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. We will also administer two practice tests through the course.

GOALS

  1. Learn strategies to improve performance on the SAT, which is required for college admission
  2. Familiarization with each section of the exam and respective strategies
  3. Review commonly tested topics from pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and statistics
  4. Review grammar rules such as subject-verb agreement and punctuation
  5. Gain practice and exposure to the exam to reduce test-taking anxiety
  6. Learn 15 vocabulary words a week

SPECIFICATIONS

This is a seven-week course. Each class will focus on a particular aspect of the exam as follows:

Week 1 – January 30th

Introduction to the exam. Discuss expectations.

Week 2 – February 6

Reading Comprehension- Teach section strategies including how to approach question types and identify wrong answers. Our strategies include identifying the main idea of the passage and mapping the passage. 

Math- Discuss the format of the exam and order of difficulty. Give students a list of math vocabulary terms that they must know.  Review linear functions. 

Practice Test- February 8

Week 3- February 13

English- Discuss strategy for approaching English passages. Review Grammar topics such as punctuation, subject-verb agreement, pronoun use, and syntax. 

Math- Review quadratic functions.

Week 4- February 20

Review practice test- Mundo Academy will bring tutors who will sit with students one-on-one to review the section on which they need to most assistance. 

Reading- Review science based passages and strategies and vocabulary found in such readings. 

Math- Review Geometry

Week 5 – February 27

Reading- Focus on historical based readings. Give an overview of historical topics that commonly appear in reading passages such as the Civil War, Civil Rights Movement, and the Constitution.  

Math- Review percents, ratios, data analysis

Practice Test- February 29

Week 6 – March 5

Review Practice Test

Discuss test-taking anxiety and time management

PRICING

FREE to students who live in Barrio Action’s service area. Students must register with parent or guardian at Barrio Action. Snacks will be provided.

SCHEDULE

Class will be held on Thursdays from 4pm-6pm.  Practice tests generally take place on Saturdays from 9am-12:30am.
