Translation: Transgender activist Sylvia Rivera, a mestizo woman from Venezuela and Puerto Rico, is widely recognized for being the first person to “dot the “t” in LGBT advocacy. She worked persistently for transgender rights. In the 1990s 1970, Rivera founded the Calle Transvestite Action Revolutionaries organization (STAR) with Marsha P. Johnson, who is believed to have thrown the first brick during the Stonewall Riots. The organization gave homeless transgender people in New York a place to live. Rivera dedicated her life to serving others and was a staunch advocate for the LGBT community, racial and cultural minorities, and the homeless. Both Sylvia’s Place and Sylvia Rivera Law Project are named after him and continue to advocate for the rights and safety of LGBT people today.

That is, until the arrival of Dolores Huerta and the like. Huerta founded United Farm Workers in 1965, an organization dedicated to improving working conditions for farmworkers. Through picketing, boycotts, protests, and lobbying, Huerta played a key role in securing legislation that protects some of the most marginalized members of our society.”
